Job Description

U.S. Bank is seeking a senior leader to manage the Core IT Services team on their modernization journey of the middleware application product suite to Cloud, DevOps, and Agile technologies and practices. The Core Application Services group is responsible for architecture, engineering, implementation and maintenance of the core middleware applications that are commonly known as the integration layer that enables our company’s business applications to communicate and function.

There are 18 core applications that span two product portfolios, API & Messaging Services (e.g. Apigee, MQ, OSB) and Identity & Access Management (e.g. Active Directory, ForgeRock). These core applications are hosted in our U.S. Bank data centers, on our on-premise cloud, and in multiple public cloud providers and are used by our employees, customers and business partners to conduct business.

As the Core IT Services Group Director, you’ll be responsible for the integrity, strategy, and execution of the 18 core applications, leading a team of 63 technologists (6 managers, 51 engineers, and 5 contractors) that have varying degrees of technology experience and skills, and also management of an annual operating budget of $20M.

In addition to relevant technology & leadership experience and a proven track record of results, this qualified candidate will need to demonstrate their ability to achieve our strategic objectives related to technology modernization, optimization, enhance platform resiliency, and cloud adoption.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and lead technology implementation projects, initiatives, and teams. Ensure that all projects are delivered in a timely manner against stated objectives and within budget

  • Develops operational and technology strategic goals

  • Provides technology services vision, enables innovation, and seeks to leverage technology trends that can create business value consistent with the company’s requirements and expectations

  • Ensure the most effective utilization of IT resources, including personnel across the organization

  • Transforming teams from a project mindset towards a product mindset

  • Work with stakeholders to define business, application, and systems requirements for new technology implementations

  • Oversee the assigned OpEx and CapEx budgets in accordance with our company’s financial goals.

  • Create effective partnerships and negotiate support agreements with services providers and hardware/software vendors

  • Cultivate, hire, and manage staff to develop an engineering culture.

  • Must be able to build relationships with technology and business teams across the company. A strong, confident, and outgoing personality is a MUST for this position.

  • Eliminating inefficiencies through process improvements and automation

  • Develops business case justifications and cost/benefit analysis for IT spending and initiatives

  • Assesses and facilitates the communication of risks associated with IT architectures, procedures, staffing, and investments

  • Facilitates the review and acquisition of maintenance contracts and pursues master agreements to capitalize on economies of scale

  • Keeps current with trends and issues in the IT industry; advises, counsels, and educates executives and management on their impact

  • Works closely with and manages strategic vendor partner relationships

  • Works collaboratively with other senior leaders throughout the IT organization to maximize department outcomes and the return on resource investments

  • Builds productive relationships with business partners to achieve common goals

  • Builds organizational capability through continuous improvement activities; originates actions to improve existing conditions and processes; identifies improvement opportunities; generate ideas; and implements solutions

Qualifications/Skills/Experience:

  • Ability to work under demanding time constraints & goals; effective at managing unplanned work

  • Excellent relationship building skills, including the capacity to predict and manage behavior, build and leverage cross-functional partnerships within and outside of the organization, and leverage influential leadership

  • Continuously demonstrates strong problem solving, actively expresses ideas, actively engaged, and demonstrates strong leadership during stressful and difficult situations.

  • 10+ years of experience managing/leading infrastructure & application architecture/engineering and operations

  • 6+ years of hands on experience app/dev & IT Infrastructure engineering and support.

  • Bachelor of Science (or academic equivalent)

  • Strong understanding of cloud computing concepts and technologies

  • Programming/scripting experience with any major programming language.

  • Working knowledge of DevOps responsibilities

  • Cloud hosting platform technologies in AWS, GCP, Azure

  • Strong working experience related to Audit, Risk and Compliance

  • Heavy bias and experience in Automation, IaC, CI/CD for the delivery of products and services

  • Experience in applying modern resiliency/availability configuration patterns to achieve continuous availability.
