Senior Cloud Database Engineer
You will be joining the London office of a global leader in the payments and financial services industry, working as part of a dynamic team of 4 experienced DBA's.
A major responsibility for the team is to ensure that the Opayo payment gateway is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For this purpose, we have an on-call rota, as well as overtime compensation to cover any possible callouts. You will also work closely with the Java development teams in an Agile DevOps environment, to create and administer the complex database environment behind their in-house built web applications.
The payment gateway is hosted in Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud, primarily on SQL Server 2017. The team also works extensively with Aurora MySQL and SQL Server RDS. Training and support is provided on-site.
Their immediate need is for a database professional with a deep technical understanding of SQL Server internals, PowerShell automation, and a willingness to learn much more.
The role is primarily to support the Opayo databases operationally, including monitoring, identifying and rectifying problems and issues.
Key responsibilities :
Manage and ensure uptime of Opayo Ecommerce platforms
Patch and vulnerability management
Drive continuous improvement of the database technology stack, staying abreast of technology trends and innovations
Collaborate with development team to support delivery of new products and features, perform TSQL code reviews and advise on best practices
Participate in the out of hours Oncall rota, including, when required, out of hours work
Ensure Business Continuity Plan is validated and tested regularly
Modernise Opayo’s database platforms CI/CD framework
Communicate with stakeholders, in particular relating to release management, major incidents and Service or performance issues
Skills, know-ho w and experience :
Microsoft SQL Server SQL 2017 + SQL Server internals (SQLOS, Data Storage, access methods, query processing architecture, thread scheduling)
SQL Server High availability & Disaster Recovery (HADR), Clustering, AlwaysOn Availability Groups
Performance Tuning, Query Optimization, DMVs, SQL Profiler and Extended Events
Strong TSQL programming
AWS fundamentals (EC2, EBS, RDS)
Documenting database architecture, processes and procedures, ensuring this is kept up to date
Maintaining database patching levels on a monthly basis
Conducting investigations into root cause analysis post incidents
Deploying database code into environments as part of the release pipeline
Working alongside the Development teams, providing consultancy and guidance on best practice
JIRA, Service Now, Agile, ITIL
Administering databases in an Operational capacity
Experience of 24/7, highly available, environments
Technical / professional qualifications :
- 5 + years’ SQL Server experience
